Precision Disposal dumpster on a trailer at a home

Hanover sits along the North and Indian Head rivers, between Norwell, Pembroke and Rockland. Here's a short look at its history, plus how dumpster delivery works for Hanover properties.

Before the English

The Wampanoag and Massachusett people lived in the area before European settlement. Local history points to sites at Assinippi, Pine Island Swamp and Factory Pond. As English settlement spread in the 1600s, Native people were pushed off the land.

Barstow's bridge

English settlers from Scituate moved into the area in 1649, when William Barstow built a bridge over the North River near today's Washington Street. For its first decades the land was the western part of Scituate.

A town of its own

Hanover was incorporated as a separate town on June 14, 1727. Local tradition holds that the name honors King George I, the first king of Great Britain from the House of Hanover. The town grew up as six villages: North Hanover, Four Corners, West Hanover, Hanover Center, South Hanover and Assinippi. Each had its own school, store and post office.

Rivers, ships and mills

Early Hanover lived on farming, small mills, anchor forging and shipbuilding along the North River. The Grand Turk, built at Thomas Barstow's Two Oaks yard, was later sailed by Elias Hasket Derby and became the ship on the Old Spice logo. Later industries included tack making, with an early tack-making machine invented in town, along with shoe factories and fireworks. The Daniel Turner house, built in 1693, is the town's oldest well-documented building.

Hanover today

Hanover is mostly residential, with shopping near Routes 3 and 53. About 14,833 people lived there at the 2020 census.
