Late October through early December is the last good window for many exterior jobs on the South Shore. Once snow and frozen ground arrive, roofing, siding and yard work get harder. Here's how to close out the season.
Projects to finish before winter
- Roofs and flashing: fix leaks before ice dams form.
- Gutters: replace damaged sections, since leaves and ice add weight.
- Decks and sheds: tear out rotted structures before snow loads them.
- Yard cleanup: clear storm-downed limbs and brush.
- Garage cleanout: make room for the car, the snowblower and winter gear.
Dumpster tips for late fall
- Book early. Contractors rush to finish, so containers get busy in November.
- Watch the weather. Cover the load if rain or snow is coming, since wet debris weighs more.
- Pick a hard surface. Lawns turn soft between frosts, so use the driveway when possible.
- Plan the pickup. Schedule it before a forecast storm so the container isn't buried or blocking plows.
