Fall is a busy season for roofs, siding and gutters on the South Shore. Contractors try to close up houses before the first hard freeze. Here's how to size a dumpster for a roofing tear-off and handle the cold-weather details.
Sizing by roofing square
A roofing "square" is 100 square feet of roof. As a rough guide for asphalt shingles:
- Up to about 15 squares, one layer: 10 yard
- 15 to 25 squares, one layer: 15 yard
- 25 to 35 squares, or two layers: 20 yard
- Large or multi-layer roofs: 25 or 30 yard, or more than one haul
Shingles are heavy. A single layer of asphalt shingles runs roughly 200 to 350 pounds per square, depending on the shingle, so a roof can hit the weight allowance before the container is full. Tell us the squares and layers and we'll size it with you.
Siding and exterior work
Vinyl siding is light but bulky. Wood clapboard and trim are heavier. Windows and doors take up space quickly. For a full exterior job, a 20 yard container is common.
Cold-weather prep
- Frozen ground usually holds a truck well, but a thaw can soften lawns quickly. Place the container on the driveway when you can.
- Wet debris weighs more. Cover the container if rain or snow is coming.
- Short days. Schedule the drop the afternoon before so it's waiting at first light.
Placement near the roofline
Put the container close enough that the crew can toss directly from the roof edge, while keeping it clear of power lines.
