It's one of the first questions people ask before booking a container. The short answer: on your own driveway you usually don't need a permit, but on a public street you often do. The rules are set by each town, so always check locally.

Driveway placement

A container on private property, like your driveway or yard, usually doesn't need a town permit. A few things can still apply:

  • HOA or condo rules. Many associations limit how long a container can stay or where it can go.
  • Historic districts. Some districts have rules about what's visible from the street.
  • Rental properties. Get the owner's OK before booking.

Street placement

If the container has to sit on a public road, most towns want a permit. That's usually handled by the department of public works, highway department, police department or the town clerk, depending on the town. Expect questions about:

  • How long the container will be there
  • Whether it blocks traffic, a sidewalk or a hydrant
  • Reflectors or cones for night visibility

Before you book

  1. Decide where the container will go.
  2. If it's on the street, call your town hall and ask which department handles dumpster permits.
  3. Get the permit before delivery day. Our driver can't place the container on the street without it.

Our default advice

Permit rules vary, so confirm with the town. When there's room, the driveway is almost always simpler.
